Alternatives to precious metals???

I want to practice my ring making and stone setting does anyone have any suggestions as to what i could use as a cheaper alternative to precious metals that would also have the same properties?

gilding metal.

As MizGeorge said, gilding metal (a sort of brass) from PL Hill or Kernowcraft is considered excellent - though I find it a bit harder than silver. The larger sheets from Hills are a good investment as you will often find you just want to try something out before committing to silver or gold...
