This is probably a really dumb question, so please don't laugh too loud, but what's the best way to clean a chain, say a delicate one loike a trace chain? Should I just stick with a silver dip, or go for an ultrasonic cleaner?

Not dumb at all.
I tend to just use baking soda and aluminium foil or silver dip. An ultrasonic will clean, but doesn't remove tarnish, so only does part of the job.
Removing tarnish and cleaning are two different things.
For cleaning/washing.
The one must have is hot, hot, hot water.(unless it's pearls.emeralds, opals or amber) If you get an ultrasonic, don't bother getting one with a heater. They only go up to 80 degrees, the cheapest kettle with give you 100 degrees.
Keep clean cold water in the sonic, and just fill a little glass or stainless steel glass/bowl with boiling water and washing up liquid(no need for fancy chemicals) .The waves will pass into you container, you'll see the dirt flow out, chuck the dirty water and do it all once more.
Much better than trying to wash in dirty water for the second item you want to clean.Plus you'll always have a brand new looking sonic.
I used to have a steam cleaner(like a hand held upholstery one),which was quite good with stone rings, that had hard lumps of a mixture of skin and soap, and sometimes pastry or paint, stuck under the stones.
I'm a fan of the aluminum foil and baking soda method with boling water. Seems to get in the hard to reach places.
