    Default Oxidising silver with gold

    Hi
    Can anyone help?
I made a ring using sterling silver and 9ct gold .I found the oxidising solution coloured the gold !!!

Would 18ct gold not be affected by the oxidising solution ?
Also does anyone know what kind of lacquer would protect and seal the oxidised silver and not harm the gold?
If so, where in UK could I purchase a small amount ?

    Cheers JAM

    Default Patinated Silver with Gold

    Dear Jam,
In response to your post I took a quick snap of a well worn ring I made for my wife. It is silver patinated with platinol on 18ct yellow. It is just possible if you try gently with a silver cloth, that the black will come off your 9ct before it leaves the silver. No harm in trying. It is not advisable to lacquer precious metals as you loose much of the lustre.
    Kind regards, Dennis.

I've only recently experimented with oxidizing silver, using 'Liver of sulphur' which my brother(who's a chemist/microbiologist) made for me. Not very good result. Or maybe the concept of turning my nice shinny thing black,is just to weird for me??

jam,if the 9ct is raised above the silver then you should be able to polish it (liquid metal polish on a cloth). When I used to get a repair, that someone had tried to repair with lead solder, I used to paint it with clear nail varnish, their hair wouldn't start falling out later!!
Easy to get,I did get a funny look from a girl at the till once though ?

Thank you Nic, in the last sixteen years I have made an awful lot of stuff, maybe one or two one-offs a week, to ward off the effects of retirement. This is rather like puffing those plastic tubes instead of smoking. I am limiting the number of my posts so as not to hog the Forum.
    Kind regards, Dennis.

Thank you. I have created an album of some of my pix previously posted. Upto Easter 2010 these are of prints scanned in and photroshopped to death. In the days of film I even took short cuts by using the photocopier as a camera, as they were only intended for my own records. I am workig on new posts with new pictures. Kind Regards, Dennis.

I put this explanation into the box in my album, but could not access it later. Any Ideas? D.
