Default Best and worse craft fairs

Which is your best an worst craft fairs?

My best is always our local Royal Cornwall Show where the locals always seem to turn out with cash in their pockets to spend, and my worst was another local show in Truro where I didn't cover costs cos I was next to a stall with cheap imported silver with a stallholder who could sell snow to the Eskimos.

LIkewise - the Devon show is always good but the North Devon Show, which is my local one, is always rained off. As it will be this Wednesday I suspect

I've done Devon Show 3 times and each time it rained and business was slow. Every time I give it a miss the sun shines and everyone says it was really good grrrr! Question is, do I give it another go or just give it up?

The honest answer is I'd give up. I used to do fairs at Saltram three times a year, the first year was great but then it went downhill. It took me three years to decide that enough was enough. If I was lucky I just about broke even - and two day fairs are knackering as I'm sure you know.

I hadn't really given much thought to doing fairs but, in a burst of activity on Friday, I wrote to all the local National Trust properties. Just quick emails asking for details of what was available and Arlington bit my bloody hand off and asked me to do the two next ones. Of course I said yes - then thought about it. Sheesh!

It was the slowness that encouraged us to move here 10 years ago now and, yes, it is far less stressful. But (and its a big but) the lack of higher end retail opportunities (certainly here in the north of the count) does wear a bit thin sometimes

If you think Devon is slow, try Cornwall!

That's why we stopped when we did. Mind you, I think we beat you on the front - that's why we're so bloomin green!
