Question How do you use a necklace mandrel?

I have got a lovely necklace mandrel given to me at Christmas, I want to make some necklaces that sit correctly on the neck line but does anyone know how you form the metal ie, 2-3mm round, D shape etc wire I just cannot get a grip on how you do it.

I'm a complete beginner but seeing you have no replies i thought I'd jump in as I have done this with my teacher.
First I annealed the wire, then starting in the middle of the wire/ front of the neck we just bent it into shape around the neck mandrel. Then I filed the ends, and rubbed the inside with a burnisher to work harden it
I've just bought my own neck mandrel to makes some more
