    Just nipped out to check mine - 8" deep, 15" wide; it's a chord of a circle rather than a half circle.

    I think it also depends on how much space you will have to move around your workspace too. My recess is 12" wide and 6" deep which nicely fits my bench peg so it's not protruding out past the edge of my bench.

    I'm really lucky and have a huge workshop/studio so space isn't an issue

    i think it's just down to personal preference too,my hubby made mine and i'm fairly happy with it,Click image for larger version.

    since this pic i've made a few changes to it,eg higher back splash,higher sides to the top etc little unit of drawers etc etc,but the cut out has stayed the same.


    it's not usually this untidy either!!!

    Just measured mine - it's 8.5 inches deep and about 24 inches wide.
    this gives me plenty of working room but still lets me rest my elbows on the edge if I want
    It's the height of a worktop (as I that's what I cut it out of!)

    Thanks everyone... hoping he might get started tomorrow, have a friend coming to work with me this weekend sometime so it would be nice if it was done
