I am looking to buy a single barreling unit. I want to achieve a matt effect on my pieces. Do I need to use shot, cutting cones and cutting powder at the same time? Is the shot essential or can I get the effect with just the cones and the powder??

You don't need shot for a satin finish. It's worth having for polishing though.

Maybe, but I don't want satin, I want a matt finish? thanks

Apologies. Satin is just a slightly less 'scratched' version of matte. You don't need steel shot for either.
