Reducing a ring .

I know I have seen this on this site….or I think I have!……I need to reduce a hefty silver ring by about 2 sizes. Now I seem to remember that there was a “formula” that every mm cut out of the shank reduced the size by….something! I know to cut where the joint is and how to find it, but the important, reducing by so much, I just can’t recollect or find!
