Sterling Silver increase in size when using rolling mill.

Sorry if this is a daft question…….

If I have a piece of 1.0mm silver sheet and I put it through the rolling mill to make it 0.5mm, how much bigger will it make the sheet?

Not daft. It's something we all want to know.

If the machine is well adjusted, you can expect the sheet to double in size. Its a big IF, so expect some discrepancy.
Also, although you might start with a rectangle it could end up a little wonky if not put through squarely.

The best result will be if reduced slowly in about four passes, annealing half way, and turning the piece to lead with another edge each time.
You might even flip it over completely once.

Even small amounts of hard grit on the rollers will leave unwanted pits, and any mistakes can only be corrected with more rolling, so making the metal thinner.

I would probably get a curve unless I follow all of the advice Dennis has given. Think also a pasta maker, haven’t seen a rectangle of lasagna yet
