    Default Solder mix up!

Yes, I have mixed up solders. Two pots, two tops marked 1.hard . The other easy. But the pots had no marking. Is there any way to reliably find which is which? I have tried heating and melting a sample of both but couldn’t notice which melted first! Surely somebody else has been this stupid! Ultimately I suppose I will have to replace both…..but this is the week end and I have work to do!

    Other than melting - colour?

As this is something I am very likely to do myself, I have marked my hard solder pot on the bottom and my easy solder pot on the lid (don't use medium). This makes it impossible to mix them up accidentally

Yes, I have now learnt my lesson and will comply…”Wilco”
Took a chance this afternoon and finished a multiple soldering project……it worked but I am not convinced so will no doubt order new supplies!

Melt them from underneath on a small piece of scrap sheet, but quite slowly.
You will easily see which melts first. Dennis.

That’s why I keep it in strip form and cut it when I need it!

Well…..2 tests. Same dimensions of solder. Same result each time, so feel reasonably confident I know which is which. Guess what? Pots are now marked as well as the tops!!!
Thanks Dennis….yet again for your help.

Now is there a solution for working out what the hardness is of those random solder chips I always seem to find lying around my soldering area?

In the spirit of not wasting them I tend to use them on projects where it doesn't really matter too much if it's hard or easy!

That’ll be the ones that ping off when you’re cutting them. I’ve been snipping into my forefinger of late!
I use them too tbh, especially if it’s something that just needs one solder

Sniffer dogs. If you already have a dog, you can train it.
