Default Silk Knotted Necklace - 18ct Bolt Ring next to 9/ 14ct Clamshell Tip?

    Hello.

I am struggling to find 18ct gold clamshell tips to go with my 18ct gold jumbo bolt rings. All that I can find is 9ct in the UK and 14ct from abroad (not ideal).

So the question is, is it OK to use a different carat metal next to the bolt ring or will this cause uneven wearing? Or some other problem?

I have not ordered them yet, but depending on the size of the clamshell's loop, I may need an intermediate jump ring, but, the same theory applies with mixing the carat of the metal.

    Help greatly appreciated.

If you want to string (pearls?) properly then you should give clamshells a miss and use french wire/gimp.

The main reason not to mix carats, is that there will be a difference in colour, more apparent in the hand, than in a photo.

If this is important to you, then use the same carat. Dennis.

Thank you for this advice, I was nervous to use gimp wire with 18ct gold for some reason and my pearl books do not reference 18ct gold at all so was at a loss.

    This gives me confidence.
