To tumble or not to tumble....can you end up with a right birds nest knot? Are there ways of avoiding this if it is a risk?

I tumble regularly, as I make my own jumprings and chain and yes I do, sometimes, get a right birds nest knot. This is usually if I've left a clasp or earwires in with the chain. Otherwise it tumbles fine. If I soldered my chains, I'd be using a traditional bench polisher instead.

Tumbling loose chain would be disastrous. The only way is to fold it carefully and tie it to something straight with thread or binding wire, but the result will be imperfect, because some of the chain will inevitably be inaccessible to the shot.
It's an interesting question, and hopefully we will have lots of replies.
My own solution is to brush it all over on a flat surface while rotating it, with a wet and soapy brass brush.
The soft ones from here are particularly good for this:http://www.metalclay.co.uk/brass-bru...ty-super-soft/
Any recommendations for a good tumbling machine?
