As Bob has said Richard, its impossible to tell from a photo, especially as monitors show colours differently.
I'd suggest you take it to a jeweller, or gemologist for identification. As you are in New York, there are plenty to choose from this list. https://www.yellowpages.com/new-york-ny/gemologists

Yes, not enough resolution for a magnifier. Too translucent for fire opal and too clear for amber. Possibly a variety of citrine, as suggested by Bob, or a variety of garnet. John Allison would know. Dennis.

Just to clarify Dennis, I wasn't suggesting anyone on here wouldn't know what the stone was, just that its difficult to tell from a photo. xx

It may be a citrine, but the reflection on the photo can lead us in the wrong direction.

Need a picture that is clearer and close up to be even in with a chance of guessing, could be an Imperial topaz
