    The charcoal is purely cosmetic to make the pitch black and can be omitted. If you do add it it needs to be ground finely. It's a waste of time and effort.

    Lampblack is around as artists pigments and makes a suitable alternative in matsu yani - it's nothing more than finely divided carbon.

    I've just looked atCookson's Eva, and think you have bought setters' pitch which ain't the one you need.I presume it will set hard in order to hold fast what is being worked on.I can't find the recipeI carefully noted(!!) BUT THINK IT WAS ALMOST 50/50.Apparently linseed oil can be added for elasticity but I didn't have any and got pretty good results without.

    This popped up in my Instagram feed today, it's a post from Rod Kelly filling a dish with pitch before he starts chasing it. You have to be inventive when dealing with larger items.
