    Thanks for everyone's help! I found a stone the exact size that I need, so I will remove this one (maybe with a hammer!) and replace it. Thanks for all the advice and great ideas! I really appreciate it!

    In summary, all the more radical ideas turn out to be expensive.

    My favourite is Geoge's suggestion of filling in the defect with gold leaf (not gold foil)
    On a pendant (and in a recess) it will not take much wear, so just size the crack using a fine brush, lightly burnish the leaf in place, allow to set over night, and rub off the surplus with a soft cloth.
