Hand engraving ( air assisted)
Ok as the title suggests I gave become the new owner of a GRS Gravermax G8, it was my intension to use it just for stone setting, easy to adapt from using hand graver.
However I have decided to pursue the art of engraving, extensive search on the net produced nothing in the way of tuition in South Australia. My question is can those members, who practice this recommend any books on the subject.

Would you believe The Art of Engraving (James Meeks)?
What do you want to do with it? Scrollwork? Lettering? Game scenes? Everything?
I do more engraving with a pencil and paper than actual cutting
-
I will start of with some lettering then would like to venture into rest if and when I become proficient I have a nice gun I would like to have a go at, I can see how there would be a lot of pencil and paper work, will look up the book.

OK, for lettering I might advocate "The Jewelry Engravers Manual" by Hardy instead. It's of its time, but the descriptions of working & letter construction are excellent. There's a few differences with power that postdate it, like being able to cut all the way round a letter in one pass, but it still has lots of relevance.
Just ignore the sharpening side from there and look at e.g. Sam Alfano's sharpening video on masterengraver.tv - you can sharpen them the same as hand gravers, but they do respond well to newer methods.

Thanks for that Peter, just ordered that one, the other one The Art of Engraving, I managed to find a PDF download, re sharpening I think I have that sorted plus I am building a power hone, and very clever mate is making me a version of the GRS Apex holder. found a really quite compressor for not much outlay, ( $200) saves me running 20 metres of hose from my shed, plus I can use it for some renovation jobs coming up. (need a new hip first)

Thank for that lots of stuff to explore for for my new venture

I meant to put a link to a bunch of Ken Hunt's drawing demos mainly for scrolls.
You do realise this is a rabbit hole you are heading down and may not be able to find your way out ;-)
