This week a bag of goodies arrived from Cooksons and it reminded me of another competition which did not end so happily for me.
The flyer said that adult learners were invited to submit work for an exhibition of crafts. In the first instance we were asked to send in the application form (rather lengthy) countersigned by our teacher and accompanied by working drawings and photographs of finished work.
Having seen an old children’s tea set made of silver, I decided to make something similar with a modern twist, using just my jewellery tools. There would be a coffee service and toast rack all on a tray, ready for breakfast. For nearly a month I thought of nothing else but sourcing the wood for the tray and handle, texturing Brilliante silver, making copper templates, making working drawings and then constructing the pieces. Finally I had them hallmarked.
I sent off the paperwork in an A4 envelope, stiffened with card, fairly confident that what I had made was good enough to be shown even if it did not win a prize. After some weeks a rather crumpled envelope came back containing my presentation, with a short note which said ‘Thank you for submitting your work, we regret that it has not been chosen, but rest assured that your entry has made a valued contribution to this event.’
So I posted the whole thing abroad for my granddaughter to play with. She is too old for it now and it is quietly tarnishing at the back of a wardrobe in a far off country.
