Hi, a little canvassing of opinion here.

Where you have obviously thin bits of opal you think are still very attractive, you can make a doublet out of them. Fine.

Where you have a crystal opal...

China, you think about 1.5 mm for backing material then? What do you aim the total doublet to end up thickness wise then? Regards P

Yes it can be a bit of a gamble buying rough without seeing it in the flesh. Usually there are quite a few photos but it’s part of the enjoyment...you’re really not sure what you’re got until you...

Cutting and polishing yes! I get the rough sometimes from UK, sometimes direct from Australia. Just thought I'd give doublets a try and wanted to show them off!

...And finally, a lovely small crystal in rainbow colours! I've used Black Agate as backing for all of them. Taken me some time but I'm quite happy with my first attempt...

Although I'd love to be able to go from cutting rough opal through to designed mounts and ending with a great set piece, my skill set doesn't include smithing (...yet) so I concentrating on the...

I love those windows of colour and the veins of flashes like lightning that run as you turn the stone.

The coober pedy stone has a lovely rolling flash to it. Not across the whole stone but but...

Koroit...the first 2 are of a Coober Pedy stone, the blue with green sparkles is a lightning ridge.
