Thanks Dennis, will give it a go
Can anyone recommend a gold earring back suitable for studs with a thin post less than 0.8mm thick. There's a lot of choice on cookson but most of them seem to be for 0.8mm posts.
Hi Dennis, just sweat soldered my gold wires on worked an absolute treat! Thankyou so much for your excellent advice
I have a commission to make a ring that features a 1.20mm gold wire and sterling silver. Got into all sorts of trouble overheated my gold wire so it went brittle also every time I used hard silver...
It doesn't, the rubber base stops it from moving. At least, that's what I'm hoping.
Hi Jules, this is what I was thinking of buying. Ball vises seem to be popular for stone setting.

Thanks Peter, that was very helpful. I do prefer the idea of the smaller one as it won't take up so much space in my flat too
I'm wanting to buy a ball vise, it's my birthday soon and the boyfriend has offered. I'm going for a generic brand as we can't afford the GRS one. My question is this should I go for a 5" or 3" ball?...
Thanks Alistair, I'll give it a go. Will let you know how it goes :)
Thanks Alistair and Dennis, I'm definitly thinking about remaking it as brittle silver is not a good look. I was thinking about reheating the ring till the solder runs and lifting off the bezels that...
No there's more, it's gone crumbly round one of the aquamarines and there are cracks where I pressed the metal over the rutilated quartz. A real shame as I really liked the ring.
Hi just finished a ring only annoying thing is that instead of the fine silver bezel settings being nice and bendable they've gone brittle and are cracking. Am I right in thinking this have been...
Denis you're a font of knowledge. What would we do without you? Shall investigate mica :) sorry to hear you are not making any more, but I hope you are proud of all the things you've made over the...
Hi Nick, it looks great. I was particularly impressed by those figure of 8 type connectors. Such an elegant way to do it rather than trying to solder individual jump rings to the sides of your bezels...
It would be lovely to see the last piece of jewellery of the year from everyone.
This is mine, a moss agate in silver with bronze detailing. The stone was nothing special until I set it then it...
That's beautiful Dennis. Your answer is much appreciated. It's always interesting to hear your thoughts on things. I'm going to think carefully how I use pearls on rings
What's folks thoughts on using pearls on rings? It's a pretty harsh environment for a pearl what with all that hand washing.
Just had myself a festive latte this morning. A reindeer in the foam. How do they do that? Hope everyone is in the mood for the big day. Best wishes for the new year, Sheena
Thankyou Jules, a client can really push a maker to a new level
Thanks Caroline and Dennis. It was out of my comfort zone. I find it surprising that I actually made it.
Some photos of the making process. It turned out better than I could have imagined. It's quite weighty but within acceptable levels I believe. Maybe I would use slightly thinner wire for the shank...
I tried to get the stone to sit flat but unfortuneatly it wouldn't, so eventually using a rod I pushed the stone out. Then I sanded the top of the tube setting down a little to get rid of the curving...
It was all going so well. Got everything positioned and soldered down, the backplate oxidised, the main stone set. But coming to the three tube settings, I got the first stone in but now it's...
She wants a shank like this. Tried it out in copper first to see if it was do-able.
