Back to my brooch this morning. Soldered together my flower and as the petals were a very organic shape and I hate sweat soldering decided in this case to use hard solder paste. Generally I don't...
I know they had little silver ones on curious gem.
Is cookson still making custom stamps?
Ah, Thanks Dennis, will have a good look over the threads tomorrow :) thanks again, Night, night
15-30 mins if you put it in something see-through you can watch it til it's the colour you want. Generally this won't give you a very dark oxidisation but it's good for antiqued and if you've set...
Anyone know of a company in the UK that makes custom stamps. It would be quite nice to mark my work with my monogram.
You can try liver of sulphur or platinol (platinol doesn't need to be heated) there are loads of tutorials on liver of sulphur on YouTube. Check out Make it with Kim's twelve months of metal.

What it was like in Perth Scotland this morning. Very pretty. Probably had about 5 or 6 inches yesterday.
Why does borrow always seem to mean given away. Urrrrrr! Never heard of didy's before but will check them out. Thankyou :snow:
Maybe I should see if there a lighter pair 1 or 2. I really want to be able to see what I'm doing. Most of the things I make are itty bitty
Oooo, never heard of that one before. I do love single subject books. I think the subject is always covered better if it has it's own tome. Will go and check it out, thanks.
Is the higher the shade number the darker the lens?
Anyone know of a pair of glasses i could use to take the glare off when soldering. The brightness is giving me migraines. i don't want anything that would stop me from seeing what's going on.
Just finished watching Nancy's two videos, she recommends a book Behind the Brooch: A Closer Look at Backs, Catches & Pin Stems by Lorena Angulo.
It's not too expensive.
That's interesting, second attempt i had my bigger torch turned down and took more time heating the metal up which seemed to do the trick. I did consider just silver but felt the design really needed...
I had another go, used a little less heat and didn't put any direct heat on the brass . The top bar was the one that melted, the one below my second attempt.

Mmm I just tried to solder my brass strip to the side of the silver strip and my silver melted where the brass was touching. I think the brass must get hotter than the silver. Any tips? I've noticed...
Thankyou so much for this Dennis, it's going to make me feel like i know what i'm doing and can solder with confidence. i'll let you know how i get on :) it will also give me more of an idea with...
This is what I have so far.

I don't have a lot of soldering experience so this one's really going to test me. The flower is made up of three parts with the possible addition of two tiny...
Thanks Dennis, i'd forgotten that Nancy did a video on this. I do wish what I read and see would stay in my brain better!
I'd love to know more than I do, which is very little :) it would be great to have a book just about brooch pins and all the differant ways to do it. Anyone fancy writing one?
I've finally got started on an 80th birthday present for my aunt. Have made the flower and the two bezels for the little golden topaz cabs (Though i did manage to accidently squash one a bit, oops)....
What about some sort of folding/origami make? :D
If it's fine silver you can use it as a reflector under gemstones :)
