You can try liver of sulphur or platinol (platinol doesn't need to be heated) there are loads of tutorials on liver of sulphur on YouTube. Check out Make it with Kim's twelve months of metal.

Is the higher the shade number the darker the lens?

Anyone know of a pair of glasses i could use to take the glare off when soldering. The brightness is giving me migraines. i don't want anything that would stop me from seeing what's going on.

I had another go, used a little less heat and didn't put any direct heat on the brass . The top bar was the one that melted, the one below my second attempt.

Mmm I just tried to solder my brass strip to the side of the silver strip and my silver melted where the brass was touching. I think the brass must get hotter than the silver. Any tips? I've noticed...
