Now that looks very efficient and it's going to work for sure.
Good job!
Eventually I got tired of making a new bench each time I moved so I designed a mobile bench that fitted into a Combi and that was a complete workshop.
My hippie days...
Unpopular opinion: If you can possibly avoid it, don't use a skin.
Far better to use a tray. Tools are put down stuff doesn't drop to the bottom of a deep well, just more efficient all over.

Something I have never been able to do.
Well done Nick. Nice work indeed.

The basic wings.
I am also busy with the neck 'feathers' that hide the joint between it and the body.

These are quite tricky to make.
The copper is the colour of the torch heat so its...
I regard the GRS system as one of the most important advances of bench technology in the last 50 years or so.
I swop my bench pin and saw pin many times a day.
I use the setting pin and ball...
Very much so.
When I said I don't bother with air vents I forgot to say I cast big things (30mmx 70mm and 10mm thick)
When one casts, a general rule is that the sprue diameter should be thicker...
Hi Medusa,
Here is a link of the whole process.

Hans
Natural objects often have many tiny undercuts. Careful with that.
I make my throat 7mm if I can.
I never bother with air lines, the sand is more that porous enough.
Here is some more information .
Nice job indeed!

So then I riveted a piece of brass to the two plates as if I were doing a real job.
6965
When the two plates were split, revealed that the rivets had collapsed nicely.

Often, when I am busy on a project, I have a need to rivet something in place in an area that does not allow me to drill right through to peen the rivet over on both sides.
The other...

Basic body finished, now for the wings.

The frame will be out of brass and the skin will be thin copper sheet with lots more undulation than the cardboard shows.
I use the CeraGloss wheel these days. It's pricey, like EU30 for one, but it lasts for years.

And it gives a chrome finish to my gravers, very fast.
It was a game changer for me.
Hi Vos,
Silver is easier, in that the zinc in brass tends to fume when too much heat is applier too fast.
Remember, though, that Delft does not give the same detail as spin casting, so it is best...
Hi Susie,
It is part of a larger project. Essentially, I am going to make a dragon standing guard over a stylistic/faery/treasure plinth.
Inside the plinth will be a piece of proper jewellery of...
I started a new project a few weeks ago.

The start is fabricated from cartridge brass.

I carve the neck and head out of two sheets of wax that I temporarily melt together. The when I am...
Well done!
Injecting flat surfaces is not without problems.
The dents are normally caused when the wax cools and shrinks.
The injection should keep pressure on until the wax reaches solid temperatures.

No reason. This is something my workshop has been nagging me for ever for, and I too am getting tired of the nagging.
Here is something slightly different I did this past weekend.

I had some purple gold made by a company in South Africa called Mintek many years ago,
Purple gold is a mixture of fine gold and...
Excellent work.
This tutorial of mine might be of help.
