I like that method Josef. The only thing I would change is having less weight in the head, so that the pearl is more visible.
The risk with rubber burrs is getting an uneven finish, use a cylinder shaped burr, that should help :)
I find that generally Cooksons is best o spot price for bullion....flat sheet, wire, etc,....but rarely so for findings and ring blanks....certainly worth checking around those already mentioned.
As Dennis has said, truing it up after soldering is key.

Long is very definitely a popular choice at the moment as Caroline has said. I would avoid snake for this unless specifically requested (and then would advise against). There are a variety of styles...
