Does anyone have any hints or setting gemstones in PMC - I'm a bit scared I might damage them with the heat from my torch ?
I've used CZ with PMC but kiln-fired it.
There's a limited number of stones that are suitable for firing with PMC - CZ is fine as are most of the true precious stones (ruby, emerald etc) but most semi precious are not able to withstand the heat. I can't post any links yet, but if you Google it you should find loads more info.
There are a few gemstones suitable for pmc but most are best set in a kiln.
Your best bet would be to use a fine silver prong or bezel cup and embed that into the PMC piece prior to firing.
Once the clay is fired you can then set any stone you like (including heat sensitive ones ;))

Nicola,
For a beginner (like me) do u mean make a silver prong or bezel cup from PMC all by myself, or can these be bought?
Thanks

I'd suggest using a fine silver bezel cup or prong setting and yes they
can be easily purchased from lots of suppliers. Fine silver is superb for
PMC settings as there's no oxidisation to clean up :Y:

Sorry- another question.....looked through Cooksons catalogue, they have pre made bezel cups and prong settings in silver, not 'fine silver'. Do you know where I can get fine silver ones?

silverclay.co.uk is who I use but most of the PMC suppliers have them.
It's on our "things we'd love Cooksons to do" list so you never know
they might be in the catalogue one day [-o< :D
