Can't Find This Ring Anywhere

Hi all,

A few months ago my gran lost her favourite ring. She got it in Greece many years ago, I believe from a random little market. I figured it wouldn't be too hard to find the ring online, however, every one I have found is similar, but not the same and she really wants the exact ring. I'm hoping there is someone out there who could point me in the right direction, to actually find this ring. I've pictures below to help describe what it looks like.

This was the first one I found online. The Greek pattern around the ring is the same, as well as the colour of the stone. However, my gran said it is too thick and the stone was more oval.

This was the next closest example I could find. Much thinner, with the blue opal and the Greek pattern. But apparently the stone was larger.

The first one looks more like the stone on the ring according to my gran. But those were the best examples. I'm pretty sure the metal surrounding the stone was thicker like in the image above, but the stone was larger like the one below.

So really, a combination of the large stone, thin ring with the Greek pattern and the nice blue opal. That's what her ring looked like. She's a very picky woman. I hope this makes some sort of sense haha. Thank you all in advance!

I know the stones not the right colour but usually you would sorce the stone you want then build the ring round that.

Wow! That looks a lot closer to what she had described. Obviously just a different colour, but that is much better. How would I be able to get a hold of that? Would I need to find someone to make it?

Thankyou. I'm not really open at the moment just doing odd days. But I could make it yes, if you sourced the stone and can wait till things get a bit more normal.

You could send a photo and measurements to my friend Sue, the Australian opal miner to see if she has anything in stock. Straight from the mine!

It could also have been Azurite, which is a much less expensive stone. Dennis.

It might've been. However, she always said it was Pacific blue opal. At least the colour was Pacific blue. As long as that is the same the stone won't matter much.

Do you have a photo of the ring or your grandmother wearing it or is this a description of what your Grandmother remembers it looked like?
Our memories and the reality don’t always match so it may always have to be a compromise if you don’t know who the original designer was. Was it gold or silver, making it from scratch here would also determine the cost with high metal prices by comparison I would think

See I don't think she really cares much about what the stone actually is, it's just the colour that she adores. I'll have a look at those links just now. Thank you!

She doesn't have any pictures of the ring or with her wearing it unfortunately. All I can give you is the description. So far this image is most like the original, at least from what my gran has told me:

It definitely wasn't an expensive ring. I know for sure. It was just very special to her.

Any chance we could switch to email if you would be able to make the ring?

It won’t be as cheap as a ring bought in Greece so the price will be worth considering

What would the price be roughly?

I don’t make rings so it will depend on whether it’s silver or gold and the other work involved in the design and manufacture

I don't know much about the materials. Probably cheap silver and any stone that has the same colour as the ones I posted.

Silver isn’t even that cheap anymore. Do you have a budget and how much would you be willing to spend on this?

I don't know what would be considered cheap for a custome ring though haha. The original ring was under £10 I believe, but that's what you would expect for cheap market jewellery. I'd say anywhere between £20 - £50. Ideally under £50.

Right. So you want someone to buy the materials, spend time on crafting a custom ring and you don't even want to spend £50? Do you actually think that's reasonable - and if so, why?

You know this is a skilled trade with precious metals and stones, don't you? You'd pay more to have a plumber come out to replace a tap washer.

That’s what I wanted to say as the days went on which brought me to my last question!

I think the problem here is that there is a massive difference between a mass produced item and one that is a one off bespoke, hand crafted article. If hundreds were being made then you would find that the prices and quality would be less.

If it was bought in a market in Greece many years ago, it may well have been artisan rather than mass produces but who knows the quality of the metal or the stone. White metal, synthetic stone. Haven’t much else to say, the sun is shining here today:)
