Sievert Torch - nozzles / smelting

Hoping someone can help me out here as I'm becoming very frustrated today.

I'm new to silversmithing and I'm trying to melt down some fine silver grain today... Without success.

I've got a Sievert torch running on propane, and two nozzles ( needlepoint and burner 3939 which is a larger ).

My question is, do I need a much larger nozzle than the 3939 in order to get enough heat? The silver starts to glow red then becomes a tad molten in places but never quite becomes molten.

If this is the case then which nozzle would anyone suggest?

Hi Nick,

These are the products that I use for both annealing and melting down as the large flame can be adjusted from a light bushy one right up to a mega hot inferno - the guys at Hamilton Gas Products are really helpful and I think they are a good price too. If you only have the small neck for the needlepoint burner you will have to purchase another neck for the 3941 blow torch burner. Don't forget that you need to keep the crucible hot too and primed with Borax Powder.

Thanks Lorraine, and I think that's answered my question. My largest nozzle is only about 15mm diameter so I need a bigger burner for more heat / coverage.

Now to find somewhere that stocks them in the Scottish Borders!

I've just ordered that larger burner today from Cooksons, seeing as its impossible to find any local stockists of such things up here in the wilderness where I live!
