what is the best method to make a silver jewel look very old?

If desired, hammer it lightly with a tiny hammer, or metal object.

Apply an oxidising solution from Cookson to darken it. Dilute a portion with tap water to retard the action.
Wash off before it gets too dark.

Then polish it back with a silver cloth, or silver wadding until you have the required antique look.
