Has anyone ever had to adjust the collet on a Foredom Quick release hand piece. I have read instructions both on the Foredom site and the paper that came with it and haven't been able to get it to adjust tighter. If you give a burr a bit of a tug, it comes out. Surely this shouldn't happen, for one it could be dangerous if one came out while it was working. I would just be interested if anyone has the same problem and how to solve it.
I can't really help Pat but I did have this problem with a particular radial disc in the Foredom and found that it was actually the shaft of the disc and not the hand piece. It's fine with all the others.
I don't have one Pat but also wonder if the shaft of the drill is in straight. I've sometimes had a problem with my Proxxon bench drill not seeming to tighten up properly and its because I haven't managed to put the drill in straight
Well my daughter has one as well and hers is tight. It must be able to be adjusted but not sure where to send it to be sorted out, not being very good at things like that, I wouldnt dare take it apart. I dont think its the shaft as when I use it with a burr that is a bit tighter it runs straight. I have another handpiece, one that tightens up with a chuck key, so i am not without, but its a nuisance having to keep using a key to change burrs.
The last time this was asked Pat a year ago, I phoned Sutton Tools and they said they would do it.

I just wondered if it is possible to adjust it yourself but although I followed Andrews video, nothing seemed to loosen, if I knew what it looked like inside it may help, but scared to take it apart in case I cant put it back together again.
Yes Pat, I don't have a Foredom but handpieces can be troublesome to put together again if you don't know how.
If the answer from Sutton is negative, then I would try Milnes Bros, who recondition and repair motors and handpieces for dental technicians and jewellers too.

I have been fiddling with it for 2 hours now and it will not budge so it is going back to Suttons to be sorted. Thanks for the diagrams and photo's, perhaps i am not technically minded enough to sort it out, but thanks for trying.
Just noticed by the paperwork that mine is a H20 so it is different from yours, good try though and thanks once again for trying to help.
Just thought you may be interested to hear the next saga in the handpiece story. I sent it back to Suttons who told me that it didnt need adjusting and that I should use Busch burrs as they didnt come out. Not really a suitable answer because the majority of the burrs that I have are both Cooksons ones and Moledo ones, some come out and some dont, but my daughter has exactly the same motor bought about a month after mine from the same place and hers will hold all the burrs not just the expensive ones. So I am in exactly the same position as before, with most of my sanding burrs etc coming out. I tried to alter the handpiece when it came back as Hans's diagram but I couldnt move the collet with the Allen key, so I am assuming that Suttons couldnt either. Seriously thinking about sending it back to Foredom to sort out, as I dont seem to be having much luck in this country. (Although sheepishly, looked back at my receipts of four years ago to find that I actually bought it from Cousins not Suttons).

Great to know that they respond quickly and resolve things without hassle. I am considering buying a Foredom Micromotor and was concerned that support might be tricky with a piece of kit that isn't made here, but now I feel even more compelled to get one! I will post separately about this when I get the funds for one!
That's a feeble answer. A 2.35mm shank is a 2.35 mm shank. How can it make any difference what make it is? Can the handpiece tell somehow?Quote:

Suttons werent exactly helpful, but as I didnt buy it from there (but I didnt know that at the time of ringing him !) but Cousins (who I did buy it from) were even more unhelpful as they said they didnt do repairs, they just basically bought and sold. It is the second time i had to contact Foredom, the first was shortly after i bought it, still under guarantee then, the problem then was to do with the handpiece and they sent me the chuck style handset free of charge, so a good company to deal with, its just the suppliers who seem to be the problem. My motor etc was bought in 2011, so although hasnt had continual useage, over the years it has been used for quite a few hours, probably somewhere in the region of a couple of hours a week, so not overused. My biggest gripe was that Suttons said it was ok and didnt need adjusting, and that I shouldnt buy cheap burrs, most of mine are Busch or similar quality, but occasionally you need a burr to do a job that will be a "one off". At a guess I think that Suttons couldnt undo the screw where the hex key goes either, but didnt want to admit it.
I've had pretty poor support from Cousins too, to the point that I will try to buy from elsewhere if there is an alternative. Only thing is that they are sometimes cheaper, I guess you get what you pay for...

Obviously not!!!!! Question, totally different topic. My niece makes beautiful cards from home as a hobby and normally sells them to friends for the cost of the paper etc, (she has the most amazing machinery too) she was made redundant a couple of years ago and started to sell them - still to friends but at a proper price, but she stopped selling them because she said she didnt get the same satisfaction out of making them. She was only out of work for a few days, but just out of interest do any of the home jewellers that make jewellery for a living find this.
I love all sorts of crafting and I make cards as well as jewellery. I also have a range of knitted items and decorated boxes. I find that after working on the jewellery for a while I become a little stale and begin to run out of ideas, so then I switch to card making and so on. If I didn't have several different things to do I think I may find myself in a similar state.
Just to drag up this old thread since i`ve just had a problem with drill bits slipping in the collet of my foredom micromotor.
While the handpiece is probably abit different to the pendant drill version, the problem maybe the same...
Having "tightened up" what I presumed was a loose collet the problem persisted, only after taking out the collet (after deciding the problem won`t go away without action)..I found quite a build up of compacted *crap* which gave a false sense of tightness.
Having picked all this out with a needle & re-assembled the problem is now fixed for the time being.:Y:
