When we set up our studio we bought an ingot mould but find the finished ingots are too thick to go through our rolling mill: the cogs don’t meet. Has anyone else had this problem or can suggest a solution? I’ve tried hammering the ingot to make it thinner (put a piece of wood over it to spread the load) but that doesn’t seem to work. Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

The ingot mould is adjustable but in length not width.

I’m not sure of the make as my colleague had it - it looks the same as what is still available.

There is your problem, it is a budget model and budget comes with limitations, I can roll almost 6mm in my mill, I would suggest you grind down the the sides on your mould to give a thinner ingot

Thanks for your advice. Update will follow [emoji106]

Alternatively you can get a skillet type mould which is open. Much easier to pour into and you can stop at a level suitable for your mill Dennis.

That’s interesting- will look into that. [emoji108]Thanks.

Brilliant [emoji108]I tried hammering the ingot under a piece of wood to avoid dents but that didn’t work even annealing it a few times. I annealed it again and hit it just with a heavy hammer but again there was no movement. I think I’ll persevere using the hammer and see what happens. The alternative is to buy the open mould that Dennis suggested.

I use a steel block on a log end so it solid to hit against dont worry about marking the metal as the roller will sort te finish out. Also keep annealing the metal

Thanks. I’ll let you know how I get on.

I think it probably takes a lot of welly and a big hammer :/

Really, always feel a bit isolated here. Sheena isn’t that far away either. Porridge doesn’t help. OH started doing major fold form and he uses a very heavy hammer that I would find difficult to wield.

Oh that’s a shame. I’ll maybe pop in and meet you if that would be okay with you.

Yes why not , I don’t have a shop or anything. Where are you?

I’m in Cambus - between Stirling and Alloa. I assumed you had a shop but if you don’t mind, I’d like to say hello. I’d get in touch first - I won’t just turn up. [emoji4]

It’s a good one Dennis. I was sent it a while ago and then I lost it.

Update for you. I’ve managed to hammer the silver thin enough to go through the mill [emoji106] I hammered it about 5 times then annealed it - did this several times. Feel pleased with myself [emoji3]

Well done. Nothing like a bit of perseverance. Hammering also helps the structure of the metal, to reduce the chance of cracks when rolling. Dennis.

I’ve just textured the silver using an old rusty hammer and cut out a teardrop shape - pendant I think [emoji3]
