Can anyone help please?
I'm looking for the above at 35-40mm, no more and
with no bevel.
I'm sure I found one for about £30 something and thought that too much.
I now realise it was the economy level I need.
Thanks if possible.
Nick (What a beautiful day!)

Hello Nick
Have you tried Vaughans - they have loads of different stakes - some under both the tinsmiths and the blacksmiths headings:

Could you manage with a 35mm steel bar held upright in a vice?

I'd go the bar route. Biggest offcut of mild you can find, dress the surface and put it in a vice. However, given it's mild you'll probably spend a fair amount of time redressing it too...
Another alternative would be to find a tinsmith's canister stake and use that, but they don't appear at < £30 terribly often.

FWIW I used to use a lump of mild in a bucket of concrete to demo primitive forging methods.

Thanks for the help Sally and Mr B, that's what I'll do I reckon.
I was perhaps being a bit too fixed in my approach.
I'll adapt.
Thanks again,
Nick

If the redressing became too much of a pain, then you could always have a welder go over the face with hardfacing rods... Debatable whether the cost/benefit ratio is correct though.

Hi, could you please explain what you mean by bevel? For example this steak: http://anvils.co.uk/product/pipe-stake/

I know it's above the price you were hoping, but can you explain (for my own education and edification) why it isn't suitable and what part has the bevel? (If you don't mind) Thanks!

A bevel means the edge is taken off so not at 90degrees
