Hi all, this is the result of my first go with my new torch. Took some 0.8mm wire melted the ends into ball ends then flattened them with a hammer and shaped with a file to make decorative ends.

Aw, thanks everybody:dance:. I really enjoyed making them and as they were my first torch project i gave them to my mum. They look surprisingly decorative when worn. It's funny how even a little detail has such an impact. I'm keen to try a bit of fusing and i've got a couple of small solderpaste ideas too. So i will definitly be continuing my experiments.

For fusing, you need to heat and pickle sterling four or five times, to remove copper and achieve a fine silver surface.
Alternatively you can use fine silver from the start, or best of all use Argentium silver, which is the metal of choice for this.

I take it if you fuse with sterling silver it will have a granular/pitted look?

No, fusing means joining without solder.
The rough surface look is called reticulation and is an effect effect done by playing a torch over the surface of sterling sheet intermittency until you have the look you want.
It seems to me you would now benefit from this moderately priced, but comprehensive book, which would help with vocabulary and inspire you to try new techniques:

Amazon also have used copies. Dennis.

Very good timing dennis. I was looking at books yesterday. I have some very good amateur books but i like to know not just how to do something, but why. The book you've recommended looks just the thing. With the fusing i was wondering why you wouldn't use sterling. In a couple of my books they use it. Sheena.

You can use Sterling Silver although Argentium is much easier to fuse, plus you don't have fire scale problems
