Hello to all and thanks for accepting me onto this forum.

I am completely new to this pastime, and very much in the early learning stage!

However my particular area is very specialised and doesn't involve jewellery as such. I suppose I would be classed as an oily rag rather than a mechanic! Specifically I am involved with the repair and restoration of military medals. To that end I will be seeking advice on successful silver soldering techniques (I haven't cracked it yet) and cold riveting, both of which are the bedrock of most repairs.

I've already completed a few projects but I am hoping for a bit more finesse in the end products, which will hopefully come with practice.

Looking forward to some informative discussions.

That's interesting. Do you use any devices, such as an ultrasonic, or some sort of tumbler, to restore them?
welcome to the forum. Dennis.

Thank you Dennis.

I haven't found a need for either at present as I find pickling appears to work effectively and appears non-invasive.
Medal collectors are very divided as to how they like the medals to look. So whilst some prefer the highly polished appearance of a parade ground medal, many others (myself included) like to see a certain amount of patina, which I can recreate using Liver of Sulphur and careful polishing.

I may invest in a small ultrasonic bath in due course however, if a particular project demands it.
