That's great :) I've only tried one tension setting and it was not a success!

And I have to ask - Ikea pebbles?

George~ i can't remember but it is a great possibility!! i have been known to spend a bit in ikea!!

Christine~ can't really think of any specific tips, except get someone to help you when forcing the ring open to fit stone tightly as it's hard work on your own!!!! you don't seem to have enough hands LOL

there is a pic of another one in my other album.

Lovely! I've never tried this setting either. Is it difficult to do?

Gorgeous ring, as is the amethyst one in your other album! I love tension settings, they're on my list of things to master!

I thought the section in Jinks McGrath's rings book was excellent, it was just me that was rubbish. I have a feeling I may have been running before I could walk though!

i haven't seen Jinks book, i did my first tension set ( the amethyst one) at evening class, and just used trial and error on my husbands ring, they could be alot tidier but i don't think they're too bad considering!!! lol. my son wants one now so i've got get my confidence up again for another go!!

I use an aluminium ring clamp when I do tension sets. It has a thumbsrew on it which I attach a normal wooden ring clamp to, this gives extra control when releasing the tension on to the stone.

I have no idea how that would work - got a picture by any chance?

I didn't know there was such a thing as a "tension" ring - it looks great.

It's good for doing tension settings and for gripping rings on the inside to drill through but for holding rings externally, I prefer the wooden clamps because the jaws on the external end I think are a bit small.

You can certainly give it some welly to get extra grip when you need it though.

I bought mine about 10 years ago and, unfortunately, I can only find them for you from my auntie's children, who I fell out with.

I still dont understand how you get the tension!!. How does the stone stay in? Are there grooves in the silver band itself?? Looks like I have a lot to learn. Any one know the best way to do flush settings for rings?

The way i was shown was to dig out a very fine groove using a small burr, without going right to the edge of the shank and shaped to fit the stone, and make the ring it's self slighty smaller than it needs to be so you have to force it open to fit the stone and the force of trying to return to it's original size holds the stone in place, hope that makes some sort of sense!!!

Hi Bridget
That makes perfect sense. How thick was the silver, (eg mm)? Once I get the hang of putting pics/photos on here I will put my attempts up to show!
