View Full Version : Asking for a friend...

Say someone sleep deprived was soldering again and again and the pallions didn't melt and they maybe, eventually, realised that it wasn't solder but sterling silver. The pieces aren't coming apart, how would my... friend... Tell if they had successfully fused the pieces?

Yes, I have a friend like that too, Kathryn.
If there is no visible seam and it will not part with testing, you can assume that the Gods have been kind.
If you can see any kind of line, then add a smidgeon of real solder, just to be sure.
On the whole it is best to crawl into a safe space and sleep rather than to sold(i)er on. Dennis.

We must all have the same friend :D
I wasn't lucky enough to get mine to fuse so just had to actually solder it with actual solder when I realised.

Every join with no solder... Madness. I've added some to feel safe and have to file down some fused imposter pallions. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180114/45645b4b67ef5e094d6b97a823ca1115.jpg

This thread answers two questions I had:

1) Can productive work be carried out after a night shift?
2) Can Sterling Silver be fused successfully?

It appears the answer is 'Yes' to both. Your friend is a genius!

I think I accidentally depeltion gilded the silver with repeated failed soldering attempts which I dimly recall helps with fusing. I did also fuse two 1.2mm wires without doing that so must be possible without too. I was fair close to melting all the pieces and in my tiredness just assumed I was out of practice.
