Hello. I am expecting a delivery of ferric nitrate to try etching silver. Apparently I am supposed to mix the crystals with distilled water but I have only been able to buy de-ionised water. Will this be ok? Someone on line said they used tap water. Also, although I have never made anything in gold, would I be able to etch gold with ferric nitrate?
Thanks

Deionised water is fine. In fact even that is not strictly necessary and tap water would do.

Ferric nitrate will not be effective on gold. I think ideally you would use electro plating equipment, but I am out of my depth here. Dennis.

Thanks for that Dennis. Will spend the next few days drawing some designs and preparing the silver while the joiner is revamping my workroom but will let you know how I get on.

Etching of gold can only be done using Aqua Regia...It is made by mixing nitric acid with hydrochloric acid in a molecular ratio of 1:3. This is a very strong acid and not for playing with. You will have to treat it with the most respect.

Sounds lethal. I think I'll be sticking to the silver.
Thanks for info.
