Ring material length estimator

At last weeks excellent Cooksons demo day one of the demonstrators had a formula for working out the length of material needed to make a ring to a specific size taking into account the thickness of the material.
I could have sworn I had the same at home in my file, but I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone help please?

Hi there,

I use (internal diameter of ring size + thickness of metal) x 3.1416

I used to then add on the thickness of my saw blade for when I sawed thru the join, but now I don't bother, you can stretch the ring more than that just banging it on a triblet to get it round.

Get the internal diameter for the ring size from an online chart like this: http://www.ringsizes.co or (probably better) use your calipers to measure inside your ring gauge or your triblet.

since the mordent app stopped working, I've been using one of my old charts (no idea where it came from, but our lovely Wallace also provided us with this:

Or forever ditch the maths like this:

1. Bend the end of a length of wire up using a ring bending tool, so that it is about one size smaller when put on your ring stick.
Mark, cut and solder. Small inaccuracies are not important.
2. Put it on an upright ring stretcher and carefully stretch to the full size. This will make it round and harden it as well.

After you posted a pic of that ring bending tool, I looked online and saw various on ebay. Where did you buy yours? I'm slightly suspicious of Ebay as I've bought a few dud things off there.

Hi Susie, I bought mine so long ago, that I no longer remember.
However this one from Tools'n'Tools might fit the bill. They are an inexpensive company who sell manly Indian tools and what I have had from them has been OK. Their range of products is truly huge. If you search their site they also have a more expensive model
