View Full Version : Silver Seaweed

Okay guys - thinking caps on. I want to make seaweed connectors for a necklace I have in mind. the connectors need to connect between wrapped-loop beads (or jump ring) and double leather thong. The scanner is broken, so I can't draw what I mean at the moment.

I can work in silver clay or silver using basic jewellery techniques.

The seaweed needs to be fairly understated as I don't want it to 'take-over' the design. If it helps, I want to make a rock-pool themed necklace using these beads

Hi Di, I dont have an idea for you Im afraid as I am too new at all of this but I just wanted to say those beads are gorgeous! Hope you get some help soon :)

I think I might make lots of silver wire pieces balled on each end and then solder them together randomly, two or three at a time and then bend and hammer them to give the impression of seaweed. Then I'd drill a hole through the hammered bit of each one and thread it between the beads. Don't know if it would work but you could just try doing one and see(weed).

Ah, thanks Carole. I was thinking 'wire' and 'ball' but I hadn't taken the idea that step further - which is what your experience and craftsmanship brings to the party.

Thanks, I'll give it a go. We're out with the camera today but tomorrow is looking promising. Will let you know how it goes.

I always liked the look of those pods on Bladderwrack (http://www.hwt.org.uk/data/images/kidszone/043_bladder_wrack_seaweed.jpg) which could be made with PMC or perhaps those mermaids purses (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3171/2623805157_668b4d883a.jpg&imgrefurl=http://monmouthdailyphoto.wordpress.com/2008/06/&usg=__0T-YlNNO8MblUG7y02DtaC9Q2Kc=&h=375&w=500&sz=143&hl=en&start=13&sig2=0hA2EJ4yuJU6DGh4vf2vmw&um=1&tbnid=eKepAOaJ4XPXXM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmurmaid%2Bpurses%2B%252Bsea%26hl%3Den %26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1&ei=8rmrSqWWBIaxjAe8vfjxBw) which I know isn't seaweed but I have seen some copper jewellery recently with a passing resemblance to these and it looked wonderful :)

Absolutely beautiful beads though!!

yes - I love bladderwrack. Actually, since I've put my mind to it there are a number of ways it could be done - I was just so blinded by fear at what I was contemplated that I couldn't think straight!

I have just been sitting doing some chain maille for a commission (something I swore I would never do) and, I think (deep breath here) that I might have got it!

Her beads are stunning - the colours are so clear and the layers and hidden bits and pieces... I am hooked I think

The only sensible option is learn to make your own! But I think it takes very special skill to make the Annelyse type, they're like little worlds within worlds...

unless i suddenly started producing items quicker and most importantly - selling stuff, its gonna be hard enough to convince my OH that i would like a kiln at some point, let alone bead making stuff too. :(

What's the problem with the workbench Su? Is it space, time or cash? My DH made mine and it didn't cost a bomb.

What's the problem with the workbench Su? Is it space, time or cash? My DH made mine and it didn't cost a bomb.

I have a few hurdles - i have a lovely bedroom that is "empty" with a large east facing window and a small south facing one. But it was vacated my my middle son, who has still yet to clear it, despite me asking virtually every week.

Then the cost - unfortunately i dont have such an obliging hubby, he is too busy fishing to do anything for me, so i have to save up for one that i can just put together and shve in the room without having to ask for his help.

I also have been tryin to build up my wire stock and tools stc, which immediately comes from the bit i have saved for the workbench. Me thinks its all gonna be a slow process, if i was successful and showed my stuff and people wanted to buy it, he would probably be more helpful, but as i shy away from stalls and things with all my craft stuff, i am kinda up the creek without a paddle lol

Why not go on freecycle Su and see if you can get a couple of kitchen base units and a piece of worktop. Just leave a gap between them for your knees. You can get clamp on bench pegs and voila! As for your son's stuff, just put it in bin bags. If he's anything like mine, he'll never get around to clearing it. Tell him it's all going to the charity shop!

lmao have you seem how much stuff is in that room??

I have thought about making my own if i can make it steady enough, but i cant do anything til there is a room to put it on. I already have a clamp on bench peg and a baby vice with a 360 spin to make it user friendly, just need to have something to atttach it to lol

It will all happen in time, i am just impatient to have somewhere to lay everything out instead of having to box everything up each time and carry it back to the spare room. As much as i like everything to be in its own cubby hole, it take much longer to pack fully away as i wrap everything so that they dont rub together in the toolbox and everything takes time

I spose i have to prove myself to him.

There's nothing like the threat of losing ones stuff to a charity shop or e-bay to give one the enthusiasm one needs to get ones arse in gear and shift ones stuff

Many is the time I came home from school and found my stuff in black bags after my mother cleaned my room for me #-o needless to say I managed to find the time to empty the bags and put my stuff away before the dreaded day came, it's amazing the amount of stuff a single bloke can amass that seems important at the time. Luckily the Mrs has shown me the error of my ways and now we both keep our stuff to a minimum... :-"

HAHA you've no hope with me I am THE biggest hoarder!

My problem is I start something, get distracted, start something else and there's an endless stream of half finished 'things' all over the flat in varying degrees of finished-ness.

Then there's my collections and books and... well... the fact we're moving into a TWO bedroomed house pretty soon kind of says it all really as we need a whole other room for the junk :'(

I got told this moring that my sons GF dropped him on friday but he convinced her to take him back (this was from the girls mother) This is another reason why i am not sure whether it is safe to take over his room yet lol, i still worry that he will be back. I didnt say to him that once he is gone and is in full time work etc, if he then decided that he needed to come home he would have to move into the small spare room, which wont accomodate his drum kit etc, although he did say that he thought he would try to move into a flat, but he got made redundent so he doesnt really have that option atm.

I went in there this morning and was measuring space - i have to leave all the wardrobes and drawers in there, but they will be usefull for storing stuff - especially for the card and candle decorating supplies, I worked out i could more the glass table i use for those and that holds the old desktop into that room under the window - i dont want my workbench there as it would be too bright lol.

That will leave me one wall of about 12' for my bench and all my jewellery stuff.

I am loathed to clear it cos he is lazy and i think thats what hes banking on lol

Just a thought - I picked up a 'table' from my local auction house for £5. It's a hollow vaneered thing with screw in legs but it is six foot long which just fits in my cramped small bedroom and it a lot bigger than the computer table that I used to work on. :)

I have joined you Jo and succumb to the lovely beads. I bought the first set you see on the beads for sale page. It's all your fault Di. I bought them to make christmas presents, though, so I suppose that's not so bad.

And Su. I have just scooped myself a free desk by being in the right place at the right time. The school where my son goes were tidying up, and getting rid of an old woodwoorking desk complete with a cut-out at one end. It's quite big, and my husband is not happy about it - but I just don't care. It was too good to leave. Couldn't believe my luck. But it's all because of my motto in life - that is, if you don't ask for things, then you just don't get them. I asked, and I got it. :Y:

:o; ueah and the elctric guitars and amps etc, but he has now started his own lighting company to do gigs and dj stuff - he went to college cs he wanted to be a sound engineer, but the second course has too much paperwork and hes dyslexic so his tutor said he wouldn't cope so he i s putting what he has learnt to work, he even has lasers in his light show!!

I had an idea about the seaweed.
Before getting distracted about sons rooms and lampwork that is.
Nodding my head here about the sons rooms. I have 4 sons and none of them have left home yet, but they do all have messy rooms. I can't complain about the drum kit however, because its mine!
Lovely lampwork!

Back to the seaweed, Is it possible to make tendrils of it into beadcaps that just trail gently onto the beads? As if a wave has just receded and left the weed draped there? I would love to see that! but its not my design and I have no idea how hard it would be to do. Just a little thought!
