Hi Folks,

I've just taken my first steps into retail (after making bits and pieces as a hobby for the last six years) by renting space in the newly opened Cygnet Craft Units in Swans Yard, Shaftesbury. We opened on the 29th August and interest from the public has been very encouraging with all 12 artisans in the collective looking forward to the run up to Christmas.

Come and visit us!

Hi Tim, :~:

:welcome: to the forum. I'm sure your collective will work really well, its always good to have a mix isn't it.

I've been to Shaftesbury a few times and its a lovely lovely place. Spectacular views too.

Keep those posts coming along, we're a friendly lot from total newbies, like me, to the more professional posters, but don't let that put you off!

Hi Tim,
:welcome: to the forum
Sounds like a successful formula, artisan work and plenty of it! :)
I'd love to see how you've arranged your shop + hear any tips
you might have that have served you well. (you can post pics by
using your profiles photo album)

My top tip for a new shop - make sure you put aside your vat/tax
I opened my shop about 4 years ago (knowing bugger all about running a shop)
Very steep learning curve but I don't regret it, the TAX was my biggest and worst unprepared for bill :'(

dont own a shop but we do run a busy garage, and when we first opened it i made sure that i opened a second account for our personal tax and the VAT. I religeously transfer money into it every month when i do the wages. Touch wood, it hasnt let me down yet. Dont get a panic when either the VAT return lands on the mat or the bi-annual tax bill :D

Hi Tim
Hows the shop going? Any of the things you make suprising you with how fast they're selling? It's so hard to guage! Sometimes I *think* I've made a winner to find it's a slow seller then I'll make something else, not feel quite happy with it and it'll fly out!
