I am making a necklace at college and want to get 2 small parts of it gold plated. Which is the best firm to use that isn't too expensive and is fairly quick? P J Finishes were suggested but I can't get an answer from them. Any ideas please? Many thanks

Sadly the Goldsmiths Hall Technical Portal has been taken off for the moment. In the absence of any other replies,, phone one or two of these and see whether they would suit you:

If you are likely to do more of this in the future, a small pen plating unit might be the answer. Dennis

They are felt tipped pens Wendy, which you can fill with the required solution, say gold or silver and require an electric current. This is a general overview:

Except the parts you want to get gold plated, Cover rest of the whole necklace with nail-paint before dipping it into electroplating.

I have this one - http://www.goldn.co.uk/gold-pen-plating-kit-economy/ but if I was buying now, I'd probably go for the battery version - http://www.goldn.co.uk/gold-silver-pen-plating-kit-battery-powered/ just for sheer convenience.

I don't use it that often, but have been consistently pleased with the results. I really should use it more, especially given the number of requests for the bizarrely fashionable rose gold that everyone seems to be after at the moment.

Rose gold looks great with natural colour pearls - better than yellow. I've always liked it. As do many Arab countries where a lot of jewellery is really red red gold.
That pen looks like a nice bit of kit at first glance, so thanks. I'll have to work out all the extra bits it seems I will need.
Cheers George
