Hi !

I went in today to watch the jeweller who is letting me watch him make various fab stuff.

He made my eyes water with the magical creation he did infront of me....A Sapphire solitare - That's what I think he called it!! - But he drilled through the metal too far, I got a bit lost on how he recovered and reset the Sapphire???

It got me thinking though, my boyfriend has a depth gauge on his Black & Decker cordless drill, is there way to fit a depth gauge to a pendant drill so that I don't go through too far if and when I attempt to replicate this ring for myself ?

The jeweller has a desktop/bench drill, can I use this instead with a clamp ?

Two questions, two answers:

Some small bench drills like the Proxxon, have a mm gauge to limit the depth of drilling. You can also just mark the drill with a bright pen, to give you some idea of how deep you are going.

Proxxon also have a small drill vice, which sits on the table of the drill and has smooth jaws, but grooves for tubing. Even so, you need some masking tape to make it safe against marking you work. Dennis.

this tool sounds like what you are describing ? I used to own but to be honest its main use was for collecting dust, good idea in theory but I couldnt get on with it.

Less fancy and considerably less expensive (but gathering as much dust)
