Well Birthday and Christmas have come early.

Both of my Sisters-in-Law have clubbed together and bought me a new toy:

It's a Sony Alpha 200 Digital SLR, it's a great beast of a thing with lots of features but it is 10.2 mega pixels. The OH has been given the task of going through the manual (I tried it and my eyes glazed over after page 4), having a play and then explaining it to me in plain English.

If anybody is familiar with digital slr and has any tips or pitfalls please let me know - it's gonna take me a month of sundays to get my head around this one! lol

Oooh! What lovely sisters in law!

I have a Sony DSLR and love it. The best things I've ever got to go with mine are a decent tripod, and a cheap remote control.

Feel free to shout if I can help at all. :)

I'm very envious but I know I'd never master it. I can't even work out my Sony digital.

start with full auto until you are comfy with it!
Just play, no expensive film to waste with digital!
Enjoy! :camera:

DSLR are the best (mind you I AM biased
I have a Canon.
For compacts you can't beat the top Panasonic Lumix's IMHO

Emma, you're absolutely right, the Lumix series are the best kept secret in compact cameras. I've seen some incredible shots from that series.

Ooh I'm SURE I need a new camera :-" my little Kodak easy share keeps draining the batteries very quickly these days and when I turn it on the date etc needs resetting. But I have been very happy with it so far... I would love a DSLR even though I know I won't know what to do with it. But the local school runs evening classes so I could try that first.
