This is a project I have just finished, loosely based on Gary Drostle's beautiful mosiac in Croyden Garden.
I actually have been teaching myself how to paint in vitreous enamels recently, and what was a simple search for some suitable images to practice with ballooned into full on month long exercise of smithing.

I posted a detailed description of the method of making on my blog in my signature line.

Great stuff, Hans. So... The definitive answer on image transfer is...?

Is it Saral?

Hans, that is epic, well done!! Just one observation to make, more to do with the photography than the piece itself. Be nice to see a shot with some scaling item, such as a coin, included.

A pendant chain, perhaps? ;)

So pendant chains are a fixed regulation size now are they? ;)

Well, you may reasonably assume it's going to be between about 1 & 3mm diameter? It's not a precise scale object, but close enough for jazz.
I can tell it's about 25mm +/- 5% :D

Actually, scratch that - I think I'm looking at a different engraving vice, I'd assumed that was a GRS Microblock but the hole layout is different to mine. If it's the standard block, that makes it about 40mm.

It is, I'm just engineer-baiting :D
(I'm allowed to, I still are one!)

Are you finding it lonely working on your own Peter, we can spend far too much time on the forum just for a bit of interaction? :)

Honestly? Not even a bit. Was waiting for some code to compile though.

Glad to hear it, better than having someone nipping at your ears I suppose.

Sorry Hans your post has been hijacked, we will stop now!

Aww, we is just playing! ;)

Being serious though, I made my original comment based on something I'd been pulled up on in the past with a picture of a pendant. That photo did show some of the chain but I still got comments that people couldn't really judge scale. Hence I now include a coin or similar in one shot so nobody is left in doubt. Certainly wasn't knocking Hans jewellery skills which are clearly excellent. Just a possible tip on presenting them to best advantage.

SM - I have to say coins and other objects that supposedly demonstrate scale are one of my pet horrors - and make pictures look like ebay listings. There's also always the issue of what coin to use - depending on where the maker or their customers are located.

If it's really necessary to show the size of something, a ruler is fine, but a measurement in the description should be enough for most people.

Hans - it's a gorgeous piece, and another great blog :)

I say use a standardised QVC wooden ruler for scale or nothing! (Sorry, my mum is an addict and the ruler thing used to get me).
Hans, you are frighteningly good.

Don't get me wrong, wouldn't have scaling items cluttering up the prime display photo, only in a secondary shot intended as further info. Also, you're quite right, a ruler would be a good option although I do sometimes get the impression that some people have an easier time with "about the size of a 10p" rather than so many mm or inches. In either case, I only took to doing it because some complained when I didn't so I guess we'll just have to say you can't please all the people all of the time! At least we all seem to agree Hans' pendant is indeed very, very good :)

can I be your online apprentice? So amazing.

I did have to laugh at the proximity of your dragon pendant in the massive recycling pile.
