Hi all,

I know this is probably a 'noob' question, but...

Where do all the silversmiths buy their stakes from?

I've looked at all the major suppliers in the UK, and they only sell a few stakes. If they do sell stakes, they often don't sell the stake holders to go with the stakes.

And nobody in this country sells the full set of Fretz products (i.e. not the stakes).

I've already got a set of Durston stakes, but I wanted to see if there were more available by other manufacturers.

Possibly the best collection of stakes (with compatible holder) I've found is on anvils.co.uk... but before I buy anything from them, does anybody out there know of any suppliers they may recommend for this?

Thanks, anybody.

HS Walsh is a very respected company for tools and they have a large range of stakes, including a bench stand (holder) for them. Browse silversmithing to find them all:

Almost all of my stakes are either second hand, or self-made. Horses for them can be difficult to source reasonably, but they're fairly easy items for a competent blacksmith to fabricate (which reminds me, I need another one).

Anvils.co.uk is Vaughns - pretty much the last major manufacturer of blacksmithing gear in the UK.

Keep an eye on this company, G&MTools, they often have nice second hand stakes for sale, I saw this set today; http://www.gandmtools.co.uk/cat_leaf.php?id=9847 ,4 nice Whitehouse stakes and a stake horse for £102.
Or this collection of 13 stakes; http://www.gandmtools.co.uk/cat_leaf.php?id=9182

You could also customise an upturned tree stump as a stake holder and it would be free

I bought a Cliff Carroll anvil stump, which is really nice. I think I would prefer to use metal stake holders mounted onto that, rather than cut holes...
