It is my husbands 60th birthday and I wanted to make some cufflinks from 1953 sixpences. They are not silver but silver coloured so does anyone know when I can solder silver cufflink backs to them or should I just glue some backs on? I do not have a spare one to try heating and soldering. It is his birthday on Friday and this is just a last minute thing. Many thanks Jane

Rather than destroying the coins, how about making some cufflinks that allow you to set the coins in place, round silver bezels soldered on silver discs are a way to go.
Or if you want an easier option just pierce out a six pointed star shape that has it's points larger than the coins diameter, twice the thickness of the coin is enough of an overlap, solder on the cufflink backs, marke the coin diameter on the centre of the star then bend up the star points with pliers at the marked line, then set the coin centrally in place. If you cannot visualise this let me know and I will sketch it for you.
