Over the years doing 'arty' courses in college I have discovered that nothing 'puts the cat amongst the pigeons' as readily as asking people if they prefer Art Nouveau or Art Deco. Of course - there are some people who like both - and others who see the link between them...but generally people seem to fall one side of the fence or the other.... and cannot or will not see the other point of view... (Perhaps they all just wanted a right ol' barney!!):-D

Anyway - just thought I would release the proverbial CAT!!....:D

Feel free to widen the discussion into art styles and periods in general.....

Oh, Nouveau. I think Deco can be a bit 'clunky' looking

Art Deco for me! I also like the Ancient Egyptian influence that came in during the 1920s.

I'm a Nouveau fan mainly for the curvy lines - here's a blog post that shows why :)
http://beardsandbarnacles.blogspot.com/2008/12/art-nouveau.html
however I do love elements of Art Deco Design -
The use of vibrant colours....and the sheer SCALE of things!

Plus who couldn't love theis "sassier" depiction of ladies! The Nouveau gals can be a bit "Oooh Mr Knight pleeese rescue me!!!"

I have always loved Art Nouveau, and I have grown to love Art Deco too (a few years ago I probably would have argued about how hideous I though it was;))

I particularly like the Art Nouveau advertisments and Art Deco furniture. I'd love to have the money to fill my house with proper furniture!

Art Nouveau, definitely.

I absolutely adore the artwork first and foremost, I love the way everything has a lovely black outline and I always wanted to be able to draw like that but never could.

I once was at an Antiques fair with my parents and was walking around stretching my legs and saw three HUGE Art Nouveau paintings which were about 3' wide by at least 6' tall. They featured three beautiful women with the usual flowing hair and lots of foliage and I fell in love with them... unfortunately they were about £8,000 a piece *ahem*

I bought some Art Nouveau tarot cards (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/art-nouveau/) instead which are equally beautiful and more in my price range :D

I find a lot of Art Nouveau a bit pompus and a lot of Art Deco a bit stark so I have to sit on the fence not liking either much to be honest.

There are some bits I like in both camps but on the whole I'm not a fan at all. :N:

Here are some links to decks I bought just for the artwork:

The Sylph Tarot (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/sylph/)

Gothic Tarot (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/gothic-vargo/)

Maroon Tarot (http://www.kartytarota.pl/index.php?option=com_zoom&Itemid=36&catid=1) I won these by writing a poem about one of the cards (can't remember which one now)

Deviant Moon (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/deviant-moon/) (I have a thing about the moon)

I have quite a few more decks (as does Nic, I know). If anybody would like scans for artistic inspiration, just pm me

For me it's Art Nouveau. Just love the curves. I also like a lot of Islamic art, which also uses lovely curves.

I'm with you there....I'd love to go to the Alhambra one day......(sigh!)

Mind you .... I also love Egyptian influences as mentioned above by Lorraine, which was, of course, borrowed in the Art Deco period...so, as you can see I am no purist!!

Having studied the whole question a bit for a presentation I had to give...I discovered that there is a link and progression from Art Nouveau to early Art Deco - where there was still a lot of use of colour and some natural forms. It was the later Art Deco period that nudged into the Moderne that was very geometric with a more restricted and subdued palette....this is the style that is considered more masculine and what used to get the college debates going!!

(......me?......a stirrer?.......I couldn't possibly comment....:-":-D!!)

This fence is getting a bit crowded, budge up Busta and Agent.
I loved art nouveau all through my teens and from there became aware of Deco.
It really depends on how I'm feeling at the time and what setting its in.
I saw some absolutely fantastic art Deco doors the other day. I would of loved to have then in my house. And I own some beautiful art nouveau (repro) jewellery.
And as for Egyptian influences,I can't help getting carried away with all the ancient arts. Celtic, Greek, Aztec, Native American, Australian Aboriginal, and so on and so on!

I love them both. That's why when I was in the art shop, I couldn't decide between the Art Nouveau and Art Deco design source books so I bought both and now I'm back to being poor :-D

Ah, I love some Deco architectural features, what I don't like are the very hard lines of the furniture and stuff. We have a local hotel - Saunton Sands - which is pure Deco and it just oozes opulence and luxury. Wouldn't choose to wear it though. (the style not the hotel)

Both gorgeous. I love the shininess of the deco doors. And Lalique is beautiful. I have a fascination with Nouveau architecture too. Look at this amazing room. Not that I'd want it in my house, but I just think it is so bizarely gorgeous.

I like elements of both. Love Macintosh work but then again Clarice Cliff is quite inspiring too. I remember my nana collected her pieces.
