Hi

I am planning soon to start to make silver fingerprint jewellery. For that I need to make a quite a big order and like everyone ( I hope) I am looking for good value but not having to pay to much money for it.
Could you please list for me a "must have" tools to start to work with silver clay?

Thank you!

Hi Could you please list for me a "must have" tools to start to work with silver clay? Thank you!.

I have not done clay for years, but I made do with things around the house: A bottle for rolling out, coins as spacers for the thickness, a recycled spray bottle and clingfilm to keep it moist and anything you might use for modelling, including a small artist's brush.

If you put clay or silver clay or metal clay into our search box top right, there will be tons of information. I would also suggest you get an informative book, but most important of all a sufficiently hot torch if you are using one. Some people have recommended this:

Let's hope my post will encourage others, but most members are fiendishly working for pre-Christmas sales. Dennis.

it depends what you want to make with the PMC really. I use a few business cards as spacers and a glass tube as a rolling pin ( I think it had some swanky 'miracle' face capsules in it) but my stuff when I do it is really basic. If you're doing more elaborate stuff, then you might want something more specialised. I find a silicone/teflon baking sheet really useful as well.

I use playing cards, an acrylic roller and those clear plastic sleeves for filing A4 paper (my brain is refusing to tell me what the correct name is) instead of a teflon sheet. My PMC toolkit also contains a pointy thing, several toothpicks and bits of drinking straws for making holes, a small paintbrush and a sharp blade.

Babette, do you have any tools at all? If not then one of the kits which Cooksons do may be your answer, they do a fingerprint specific one and they all seem to be at a discounted price at the minute. Instead you could make a note of which tools are in the kits and then Google to see if you can find them cheaper. http://www.cooksongold.com/Precious-Metal-Clay/-Range=Kits/-Alloy=0/-Type=0/&prdsearch=y

Thank you all very much for all of the answers.
I don't have any tools at all yet. I already put my eye on one of the cooksongold kits ( the one for fingerprint jewellery).
As I want to work mainly with fingerprints for now.
I was just wondering if it is going to be enough? I mean as a beginner I don't want to spend lots of money on stuff which I am not going to be able to use due to the lack of knowledge...

I'd say the fingerprint kit would be fine as it gives you all the basic tools apart from the moulding putty for getting the impressions. You might also want to get some cutters as there is only 1 circle cutter in the kit and a set of spacers as the spacers in the kit make a very thin piece.

Sorry I know it is going to sounds silly but what is : Moulding putty?
I am still having problems with terminology ( specially that English - as you can see when I am making mistakes- it's not my first language)...
