View Full Version : I've been thinking about colour

For the past few weeks I've been thinking about colour and how to express some of the things I see or feel. When I was a child, my mother used to tell me that if there was enough blue in a cloudy sky to make a sailor a pair of trousers, then the day would brighten up. I never thought to ask what size trousers :(|

A couple of weeks ago, I saw such a sky, which I have tried to represent in this necklace. The lampworked beads are by Rob Johnson, the chain is sterling, as is the clasp. I usually make my own clasps but they are rather heavy in style and I thought this required something rather more delicate.

Awesome bracelet! I'd say the trousers would be a 32 Regular.....
Love the "Patch of Blue" <3<3

It reminds me of that first patch of blue that comes through on an early summer morning just before the sun comes up, the clouds aren't exactly rainy grey just a little dark still and so full of promise. Love it! =D>

Lovely bracelet! But I can't view anything except the thumbnail as it says I am 'not allowed to' :'(

Julie - 'LUSH'? Is that a hint to Jason for suppliers as in LushLampwork (http://www.lushlampwork.co.uk/index.htm) ? Or JASON did you mean suppliers for the kit to make lampwork beads?

The really well-known lampworkers tend to sell out of their wares very quickly indeed - you almost have to be online the minute they post. I'm thinking here of folk like

Emma Ralph (http://www.ejrbeads.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=13_36)
Crystal Garden (http://www.crystalgarden.co.uk/)
Lush Lampwork (http://www.lushlampwork.co.uk/userimages/procart5.htm) (famed for her 'torch porch')

However, I like to support the less well-known artists and the ones in this particular piece were made by Rob Johnson (http://www.lampworkbeadsbyrob.com/page5.htm).

With lampwork beads, as with anything else, once you find somebody who seems to share your artistic vision (sounds up meself, but you know what I mean) its a match made in heaven.

A good place to start looking at lampwork beads is: British Lampwork (http://britishlampwork.co.uk/)

Halfway through last year I was all booked and ready to go on a course with a local lampworker Mango Beads (http://www.mangobeads.co.uk/) when I had to go into hospital suddenly. Sadly, the opportunity has never risen again but I would love to learn.

I'd never really consider using lampwork before, the mark up in my local store make them a bit expensive. But Di had to go and post a link so now I'm waiting for my first set of beads and thinking about what I want to make with them. I wish I didn't give in to temptation so easily ... well actually no I don't I love it. lol

Well Di,

I have gone and done it, purchased a set of Emerald Mine natural beads from Rob Johnson, only 5 on the string but I intend making my first beaded item with a lot of silver beads that I will make myself and just hope it turns out OK and that the mother likes it. I couldn't resist them, did all the sites and those ones screamed make me into something.

I have big ideas planned, just bought lots of 5mm peridots which I intend to incorporate, beads and gemstones, what a mix.

I am actually really looking forwards to creating my first beaded piece. :Y:

your mother will love them beads made into something nice from you ..:Y:

I have it all envisioned already. Took one look at those beads and they screamed autumn/winter. I want to make either a spacer or spacers with large silver ivy leaves and manufacture silver spacer beads with tiny leaves on them and maybe (unsure) little spacer beads set with green mystic topaz.

In my mind it looks beautiful, lets hope I can pull it off.

look forward to seeing these lovely beads from rob & what you do with them sound good

I'm a bit late to this one Moony, but I love the neclace, or is it a bracelet, I've forgotten already. But I also love that little bit of wisdom from your Mum. Sounds like things my grandmother would have said.

His beads are just wonderful, aren't they - I love the emerald mines and, as I've already mentioned, peridot are my fave (birthstone see). Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Beautiful beads, really up my street. I'm not a 100% sure what lampwork means but I guess its clever glasswork:confused:

I never know what to do with beads... I'm currently working on a necklace but I'm torn between adding a pearl and a swarovski crystal or leaving it totally simple and silver. Strange being a jeweller and being scared of beads eh?;)

Jason, I love making stuff for my mum, I want to make something special for her next week to thank her for helping me with my wedding.

And what a find MR Johnson is!!...you don't get too many men lampworkers do you? I think they produce much more 'earthy' and 'robust' beads. I've just sent the link to a friend of mine who needs a bit of a boost...I'm sure it will hit the spot...really inspirational stuff!! Those encased quarry beads.....W...O...W..... words fail me...(a very rare event:-D!!)

Goodness Di,

I just realised you have a website, talk about blond. I cant believe how good your work is and how amazingly priced everything is.

Do you know if you changed the clasps on your blackbird bracelet and changed the colour of the beads I would buy one for myself, that could so easily be tweaked as a mens piece, awesome.

Wanna make me one?

Have you ever thought of doing a few mens bits just to test the water?

You're not blond sweetie, I've only just put it up there ;) I have seriously thought about mens stuff, specially since my sons mates have all ordered surfer beads. Yeah, I'll have a go at making you your very own blackbird. I've worked the prices out very precisely - 3 times the components plus the cost of my time, postage and packing. Its scary to charge for your stuff but, hell, why not...
