One of the things that i was sketching the other night when i was having my "moment" was some fretwork pendants. Obviously by removing sections i will weaken the strength of the metal, i think the oblong one will be about 3cm x 2cm. Do you think that 1.5mm silver will be thick enough to retain some strength after its been cut out? Thats the thickest sheet i have atm - i have only three little bits of sheet, all 10cm x 10cm and their thicknesses are 1.5mm, 1mm, and 0.7 mm - which i am hoping to use for my adventuous project if i can bend it the way i want to bend it.

As long as you're not taking too much away, at that size you should be able to get away with 1mm. It's a lot thicker than you think, and you may find it easier to saw if it's a first go!

its just a rectangle with irregular shapes cut out inside to leave just a kind of pattern of metal inside

My first key ring was 2mm and i did some cut out bits in that so i should be ok i hope:-"

Either 1mm or 1.5mm are fine then :Y:
If you use 1.5mm and are careful you could make funky stud earrings
with the bits you saw out :D
