Hey all

I want to know if there is a way to oxidise only the outside of a ring as I'm fed up of doing the whole ring and having to spend hours polishing the inside to get it to be silver again. I use liver of sulphur solution and have always just dunked the rings in it. I've tried painting it on with a brush or q-tip but not had great results that way.

Any tips please much appreciated as I've got two ring orders to do today and I'd like to know is I can speed up my process at all.

Thanks

E

Platinol paints on beautifully in very specific places. Don't use a bristle brush though, as it will disintegrate!

Alternatively, use stopout varnish or even clear nail polish to mask areas you don't want to oxidise.

Yes I am a fan of Platinol too, but I dilute it with equal parts of cold water and avoid hot water when rinsing, so that the colour builds up slowly. This way the result has less tendency to flake off again.

That said, as with all patination, on rings the high parts quickly become shiny again, so all you can hope for in the long term is an antiqued effect.

I'll have to get some of this platinol stuff - where do you get it from - if it flakes off does that mean it's not tarnishing the metal and just coating it instead? It won't help me today though as I need to get these two rings finished this afternoon - so stuck with liver of sulpher - going to try and paint it on again and see how it goes. I don't have any stopout varnish - let me know where I can get that too. Also don't have any nail varnish to try - damn!

Thanks for the info.

A tip given to me is to use a cocktail stick to do fine lines, it's far easier than a brush
