Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a few weeks, and have finally plucked up courage to say hello!

I've always wanted to try silversmithing, and started playing with metal clay six months ago, but as the price has shot up, I'm using proper silver a lot more. I've learned a bit from books and t'internet, but there's no substitute for conversations with folk who know what they are doing, so here I am! I've been making stone set rings and pendants, but have some ideas for other projects so will be asking for help with techniques, my next project is a silver broomstick brooch for my mother-in-law's 70th birthday. I am lucky enough to have my own workshop (well, a posh shed!) to escape to and bash metal to my heart's content. A big improvement on the breakfast bar in the kitchen which has it's fair share of scorch marks... #-o

Hi Mel, welcome to the forum. I hope mother in law has a sense of humour! Reminds me of a brooch I made when I was new too.
Dennis.

I love that brooch, Dennis! Is that cut with a piercing saw and hammered?

I had a spell of making flat brooches, because when I started I was giving lots away. I made the hammered finish first with a ball pein hammer from the ironmongers and then cut out the shapes. Sorry my ancient scanned in photo of them is not very good. There is also a thread here called 'The Flip Side Of Brooches', which might be of interest. regards, Dennis.

That's a hugely helpful thread, Dennis, thanks so much! I love hammered things. I made a ring yesterday with a sort of "micro-hammered" finish, which I did with a 1oz pall pein hammer. Mel

Very nice, and having read your blog about it, you confirmed me guess that you'd used a little wire wrapping as well as hammering and soldering.

Thank you Anne, I did use a little wire to wrap it, even though the joint was (surprisingly) neat enough to leave visible. I just thought it would look a bit more "broomsticky" with that detail :-)

Well done, Malanie. You are definitetely an ideas person, and you have pushed yourself a little further with your wire decoration. Hope M.i.L. enjoys it, Dennis
